Hospital did not ask surgeon to leave after high level of infections

Accreditation Connection, September 8, 2008

Although Douglas Wallace, MD, a cardiac surgeon previously linked to a high level of patient infections at Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, CA, is leaving, the hospital says he was not asked to leave, according the Fresno Bee.

When state and federal investigators looked into the high rate of infections, the majority could be linked with a particular surgeon with 'questionable practices," but they did not name the surgeon. The state had closed the cardiac surgery program for a week due to infections.

Robert Smittcamp, chairman of the Saint Agnes board of trustees, says Wallace's departure had nothing to do with the high level of infections, which spiked after the hospital launched a cardiac surgery team, including Wallace.

Saint Agnes plans to create a new infection control policy, which will include more tracking of patients after discharge, according to the Fresno Bee.
