CMS seeks to coordinate payment policies for 'never events'

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a letter offering guidance for coordinating response to hospital providers billing for healthcare-acquired conditions known as “never events.”
The letter provides a brief overview of CMS’s Medicare payment policy for select conditions, an overview of policy consideration for state Medicaid programs, and direction as to how states can implement policies that are aligned with CMS to prevent payment liability as a second payer.
