2009 NPSGs: A focus on HAIs, infection control

Accreditation Connection, August 8, 2008

The Joint Commission announced its 2009 National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) and elements of performance (EP) in June, with significant changes in the areas of infection control, medication reconciliation documentation, and the Universal Protocol (UP).

This year’s NPSGs also include a very noticeable change: A new numbering format. This format will match the renumbering in the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals, expected to be implemented in January 2009.

Hospitals will need to take special care to address new requirements in the area of medication reconciliation, says Bud Pate, REHS, vice president of content and development at The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc., in Marblehead, MA.
