Update: EMTALA, CMS, and your hospital

CMS has taken the state policy memos that have been written during previous years and placed them in the interpretive guidelines. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 (EMTALA) interpretive guidelines had not been updated since May 21, 2004.
The revised EMTALA interpretive guidelines, or State Operations Manual, was published March 21 in Memo 08-15. Visit http://tinyurl.com/6l46wn to obtain a copy.
