Working with your data

All hospitals are reviewing core measures in some fashion. The question is, where to start?
“What are the things each hospital needs to do to understand core measures?” said Jacqueline Matthews, RN, MS, director of quality and infection control in the Quality and Patient Safety Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.
Look at how they’re reporting core measures at the executive level, Matthews said. Review upcoming measures sets. Also, make sure you can explain these factors to your constituents—the leaders, department heads, and others to whom you will be passing on this information.
“And start utilizing bundles. When you break out individual measures, you may look very good, but when you bundle them by patient and ask if the patient received all the appropriate care they were supposed to, it’s possible your scores will look very different,” said Matthews.
