CMS expands list of 'never events'

Accreditation Connection, August 1, 2008

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced three additional preventable conditions for which it will not reimburse. These three events are in addition to the eight previously set forth and were among the nine potential conditions listed in a proposed rule issued earlier this year.

The conditions are:

  • Surgical site infections following certain elective procedures, including certain orthopedic surgeries, and bariatric surgery for obesity
  • Certain manifestations of poor control of blood sugar levels
  • Deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism following total knee replacement and hip replacement procedures
