Alleged heparin error costs entertainer a hand

A Philadelphia comedian is suing a local hospital for an alleged medical error which ended in the amputation of her right hand, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Dolly Garber’s right hand had to be amputated after she was injected with heparin three times in her sleep while a patient at Frankford Hospital (Philadelphia, PN). Garber’s hand was effected by a birth defect known as cavernous hemangioma, tumors filled with blood. Garber, was aware of her reaction to heparin and said she always informed hospital staff of her allergy when receiving medical treatment.
Heparin has been making headlines in recent months following several high-profile cases in which infants received massive overdoses of the blood thinner.
