Patient education: ED patients frequently unclear on instructions

Accreditation Connection, July 18, 2008

Seventy-eight percent of emergency department (ED) patients interviewed did not understand key instructions about their health, according to a study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

The study broke down patient comprehension into diagnosis and cause; treatment in the ED; steps to follow at home to deal with the problem; and which symptoms should prompt a return to the ED. The study also excluded patients who were likely to have communication problems, such as patience diagnosed as intoxicated or facing a language barrier.

Additionally, the study found that 80% of the patients who did not understand the instructions given to them were unaware of their lack of understanding.
