Limiting restraints results in increased safety

Accreditation Connection, July 11, 2008

As hospitals limit the use of restraints and explore various techniques to keep their patients safe, one option has been using a sitter or companion. Often used in psychiatric wards, sitters typically watch patients to make sure they do not put themselves in danger.

“We all worked together to come up with a way to limit restraints,” says Cheryl Brown, RN, BSN, a quality improvement nurse at the hospital. “We were looking at older adults, and one of our main focuses was keeping their cognitive abilities and limiting functional decline while they were in our care.”
