Accreditation Connection, July 3, 2008
Eighteen patients have filed suit against Duke hospitals following operations in which the patients were exposed to surgical instruments washed with elevator hydraulic fluid the North Carolina News & Observer reports.
The operations took place in 2004. The suit alleges that the hospital committed fraud and negligence in connection to the use of these instruments. The errors were the result of elevator fluid drained and mistakenly stored in empty detergent drums, which were then sent back to the hospital as washing fluid, according to the report.
