FDA to alert physicians of safety issues
Accreditation Connection, June 20, 2008
A number of healthcare organizations, manufacturers, and insurers have banded together to promote a system for alerting physicians when a drug or device has been tied to previously undetected dangers, the American Medical Assocation’s (AMA) newspaper, AMednews, reports.
The Food and Drug Aministration, AMA, physician specialty groups, manufacturers of drugs and medical devices, and medical liability insurers are working together to promote an online system, the Health Care Notification Network, which will send “dear doctor” notifications to physicians to alert them of newly uncovered patient safety issues.
The network is free to physicians and funded by drug and device manufacturers. It is expected to shave days to weeks off of the time it normally takes to alert physicians of such patient safety issues.
