Study: Racial, ethnic disparities in patient safety events

Accreditation Connection, June 6, 2008

A report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project has found that rates of sepsis were higher in Asian-Pacific Islanders and African Americans than other groups.

The report studied patients in 2005 examining disparities in racial and ethnic groups regarding hospital-based patient safety events. Overall, minorities had higher rates of post operative complications than whites. Asian-Pacific Islanders also had the worst outcomes for most obstetrical complications, while African Americans and Hispanics had lower complication rates than other groups.
