Report: Blanket data use consents not beneficial

Accreditation Connection, May 22, 2008

The Health Privacy Project of the Center for Democracy and Technology issued a report this week discouraging the use of far-reaching patient consents for data use.

The group argues that patients are better served by a tightly controlled system than by a larger health data sharing database. The group advocates the use of audit trails, technical safeguards, and established methods of enforcement. Patients should also be made aware of where the data will go, according to the report.
