Patients take HAI prevention into own hands

Accreditation Connection, May 2, 2008

Groups such as the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths and the Safe Care Campaign are raising public awareness with five simple steps patients can take toward not becoming a victim of these infections.

The advice includes:

  • bring your own toys for children to play with
  • stay warm before and during surgery
  • ask physicians to wash their hands
  • ask where syringes have been
  • be your own advocate for infection control

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 99,000 hospital acquired infections lead to death each year, CNN.com reports.
