GOA issues report on HAIs

Accreditation Connection, April 18, 2008

The Government Accountability Office released this week a report focusing on healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in hospitals.

The report, Healthcare Associated Infections in Hospitals: Leadership Needed from HHS to Prioritize Prevention Practices and Improve Data on These Infections, recommends that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) identifies practices in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and establish more consistency and compatibility of information and data collected on HAIs.

While several programs within HHS gather data on HAIs, limits in scope and a lack of coordination between these programs can limit the use of the data collected, the report states.
