New campaign advocates patient involvement in care
Accreditation Connection, April 11, 2008
The Joint Commission has launched a national campaign promoting greater understanding and involvement by patients in their own care. The program, “Understanding Your Caregivers,” acknowledges the challenges inherent in understanding the information provided by physicians and other caregivers, and promotes “health literacy” to help prevent medical errors.
The program provides means for patients to know the right questions to ask about their care, as well as reminding patients that it is appropriate to request additional clarity and information about their care if they have any concerns or questions.
