Reports of heparin-related deaths triple since January 2007
Accreditation Connection, April 11, 2008
A U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) report states that deaths involved with heparin have tripled, according to the Chicago Tribune. The report found that 62 deaths occurred between January 2007 and March 2008 among patients who experienced allergic reactions to heparin—a stark contrast to the 19 deaths reported in an earlier FDA report.
These patients include those infused with a tainted version of heparin sold by Baxter International, Inc. The FDA has not yet determined the reason behind the spike in allergic reactions to heparin.
