Pennsylvania hospital infection rates released

According to a state report, more than 30,000 patients acquired infections while receiving treatment at Pennsylvania hospitals in 2006—roughly 19 of every 1,000 patients—the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Further, the report states that patients who acquired infections stayed an average of 19 days versus five days for patients who did not contract an infection. The average hospital’s costs went from $34,000 for non-infected patients to a staggering $176,000 for patients who acquire an infection.
