Surveyors praise emergency management plan

Accreditation Connection, April 4, 2008

During the facility's 2007 Joint Commission survey, Memorial Health University Medical Center, Inc., in Savannah, GA, received high praise from a physician/administrator surveyor regarding its emergency management plan. Specifically, the surveyor said that the facility's emergency management plan should be the model for the nation.

Memorial underwent a five-day survey with four surveyors. The Life Safety Code® specialist surveyed the hospital for one day; the administrator, who was also a physician, surveyed the hospital for three days. On day three, the physician/administrator surveyor designated to examine the environment of care (EOC) gave the hospital a list of documents that he wanted to review ahead of time, including all seven EOC plans, the most current annual review of the plans, and the hazard vulnerability analysis.

He also asked for documentation of exercises and their critiques. After reviewing the documents, the surveyor requested that the hospital conduct a tabletop drill for a biohazard event.
