Wellpoint to no longer pay for hospital mistakes
Accreditation Connection, April 4, 2008
Hospitals will now be responsible for paying the price when making medical errors, according to a report by MSNBC. WellPoint Inc., the nation's largest health insurer, will withhold payment for three "never events," which are considered major, preventable medical errors.
WellPoint states that hospitals will be responsible for the cost if errors such as wrong site surgery take place. It has constructed a list of 11 serious errors for which Wellpoint will no longer take financial responsibility. This decision comes on the heels of a decision by CMS to not reimburse for preventable errors made by healthcare facilities.
The insurer hopes to improve hospital care with its new policy and cut down on medical mistakes.
