Ask questions to avoid medication errors

The best advice to patients for avoiding medication errors involves opening up the lines of communication, reports the Cleveland Plains Dealer.

With more than 1.5 million patients each year injured through medication mistakes (to the cost of $3.5 billion a year in hospital charges), experts advise asking questions of healthcare professionals and creating a dialogue regarding current medications can go a long way towards eliminating errors. Specifically, patients are advised to ask whether any medication they are prescribed is really needed, and whether the risks are greater than the benefit.
