Stroke deaths increase on nights and weekends Two recent studies have found that stroke patients who arrive at the hospital at night or on weekends face an increased likelihood of dying than those who suffer strokes during daytime hours, the Washington Post reports.

One study analyzed over 2.4 million stroke cases in the U.S. and found that mortality rates on weekdays were 7.9% vs. 10.1% on the weekends. The second study found higher mortality rates for both ischemic strokes (5.2% during on-hours and 5.8% during off-hours) and hemorrhagic strokes (24.1% vs. 27.2%) in a study of over 300,000 cases.
