MI hospitals allowed to use checklist for preventing catheter-related infections
Accreditation Connection, February 22, 2008
The Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has determined that a plan to implement a checklist for the purpose of reducing catheter-related infections in intensive care units (ICU) may continue. The announcement followed concerns from OHRP that the checklist would fall under regulations governing human subjects research.
The checklist, which is now being used in several Michigan hospitals, is part of a study intended to demonstrate a comprehensive five-step program intended to dramatically reduce the occurrence of catheter-borne infections in ICUs.
The official OHRP announcement and further details on the study can be found here.
