Drug errors occurred in one in 10 patients at six Boston community hospitals

Accreditation Connection, February 15, 2008

One in every 10 patients admitted to six Massachusetts community hospitals were involved in serious, preventable drug errors, according to a report in the Boston Globe. The report, issued by a pair of nonprofit groups, pushes for all Massachusetts hospitals to adopt computerized prescription ordering systems.

Previous reports have shown that large-scale academic hospitals without computerized systems had errors of this kind occur less than half as often. Only 10 of the 73 Massachusetts-based hospitals currently have computerized ordering systems.
