All you ever wanted to know about S3 but were afraid to ask

The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) released its Strategic Surveillance System (S3) in 2007. It intended to help hospitals measure their own performance based on existing data. However, whether through confusion or concern, many Joint Commission-accredited facilities have not made use of the site. There is some confusion as to the purpose of S3.
"It is a common misconception that S3 scores are used to determine how a facility falls into the schedule for its next unannounced survey," says Bud Pate, REHS, director of west coast operations for The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc., in Marblehead, MA.
It's not really used to gauge the timing of the next survey, says Pate. However, the two processes do look at some of the same information.
