Critical access hospitals allowed to participate in outpatient quality reporting

Accreditation Connection, February 1, 2008

A request by the American Hospital Association (AHA) to allow critical access hospitals to submit and publicly report outpatient quality data alongside other hospitals has been granted by CMS.

Hospitals participating in Medicare's outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS) are required to report on seven outpatient quality measures in order to receive full Medicare payment for 2008. However, critical access hospitals, because they receive cost-based reimbursement, have not been allowed to participate in OPPS until now. AHA advocated for their inclusion as a matter of transparency and quality improvement.
