PA hospitals target preventable errors
Accreditation Connection, January 25, 2008
The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) has issued a new policy stating that hospitals will not receive payments under the state's Medical Assistance program, for preventable adverse events, such as wrong site surgery and medication errors.
The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) worked with the DPW to develop the policy, and has thrown its support behind the announcement.
"We think that this new policy provides guidance for hospitals and the Medical Assistance program that will assure that payments are made to hospitals for medically necessary services, and not made when preventable serious adverse events occur during hospitalization," said Paula Bussard, HAP senior vice president for policy and regulatory services, in an official statement.
HAP's official statement can be found here.
