OIG criticizes specialty hospitals ability to manage medical emergencies
Accreditation Connection, January 11, 2008
The Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has released a report critical of physician-owned specialty hospitals' ability to manage medical emergencies.
The report examined 109 physician-owned specialty hospitals and found that although half of such facilities have emergency departments, not all have nurses on duty and physicians on-call, while less than a third reported having physicians on-site at all times. Two-thirds of surveyed facilities listed dialing 911 as part of their emergency response procedures.
The report calls on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to develop a system to identify and better track these facilities. The report can be found here.
