BOJ survey looks at readers’ RFI concerns

Accreditation Connection, December 19, 2007

BOJ recently invited its readers to discuss RFIs received during their most recent Joint Commission survey. The poll, conducted online, asked readers to discuss anonymously where they were "dinged" by surveyors, whether they intended to appeal, and where their concerns lie in the coming year.

"I didn't see any surprises other than the amount of RFIs seemed low to me," says Lisa Eddy, RN, a consultant with The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc., in Marblehead, MA.

Eddy remarks that the areas of concern voiced in the survey fall in line with what she has observed from the field. Trouble spots remain consistent across the country in terms of standards compliance issues and National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).

"I didn't see any red flags, but I am wondering if the surgical time outs issue is really the surgical pause or is the issue of marking of the surgical site-which is very problematic for large organizations with multiple surgeries performed a day," says Eddy. "Many surgeons simply do not have the time to do that if they are running multiple cases."
