Q&A with Mark R. Chassin, MD

Accreditation Connection, November 30, 2007

In August, The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) announced its choice of successor as president of the organization: Mark R. Chassin, MD, MPP, MPH. Chassin is the Edmond A. Guggenheim professor of health policy and chair of the department of health policy at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and executive vice president for excellence in patient care at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. His term begins January 1, 2008.

BOJ recently interviewed the president-elect, with topics ranging from the future of The Joint Commission to remote assessment of quality of data.

Q: How do you envision The Joint Commission changing and growing under your leadership?

A: The Joint Commission is a dynamic organization that has a long history of evolving to meet the needs of healthcare organizations and stakeholders who rely upon it. Though it is too early for me to talk about specific plans, I do look forward to building on that foundation to further enhance the organization's capacity to facilitate the achievement of higher levels of safety and quality in healthcare.
