Massachusetts hospitals will not charge for preventable errors

Accreditation Connection, November 21, 2007

The Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA) announced that the state's hospitals will not charge patients or insurers for preventable errors that occur at their facility. This policy will use the preventable errors defined by the National Quality Forum.

Preventable errors include serious medication errors and wrong-site surgeries.

Massachusetts is the second state to adopt such a policy. Minnesota adopted a similar policy in September 2007.
